Lotus Essence Tantra

revealed by Terchen Chokgyur Dechen Zhikpo Lingpa and arranged by Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo

The Lotus Essence Tantra (Pemé Nyingpö Gyü) was initially imparted by Guru Padmasambhava and subsequently revealed as a treasure by Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa (1829–1870) within The Guru’s Heart Practice: Dispeller of All Obstacles (Tukdrup Barché Künsel) cycle of teachings. This tantra belongs to the teachings of Guru Pema Jungné (also known as Padmakara or Lotus-Born), the sixth emanation among the twelve forming The Dispeller of All Obstacles mandala.

The Guru Pema Jungné cycle presents The Lotus Essence Tantra as the pinnacle of “six extraordinary teachings” that are specific to the lineage of the Great Perfection (dzogchen), leading to liberation through the senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell, and even wearing.

Drawing from the treasure root text, Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo (1820–1892) composed a liturgy for this practice, a liturgy that “liberates through recitation.” Revered as profound yet succinct, this tantra was acclaimed by Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo as “the quintessence of all tantras, statements, and instructions; encapsulating the essence of one billion heart practices; and serving as the foundation and core of the Lamé Tukdrup Barché Künsel teachings, replete with ineffable blessings and wonders.” Consequently, it is upheld as the pivotal tantra that conveys the fundamental aspects of this cherished practice cycle, encompassing the ground, the path, and the fruition.
