Generosity has always been a fundamental aspect of the Buddhadharma, and of all the six perfections taught in the Mahayana, generosity marks the beginning of the bodhisattva’s path. Ancient Buddhist history recounts the tales of the legendary patrons of the Dharma, such as Dharma King Trisong Detsen, who gave the entirety of their vast treasuries to support the Dharma. To allow for lay and monastic practitioners to completely dedicate their lives to the study and practice of the Dharma, and thus allow the Dharma to flourish and spread, is entirely rooted in the practice of generosity. By engaging in generosity, and especially by supporting the Buddha’s Dharma, the accumulation of merit is perfected. In these times of global challenge, this abundance is needed, now more than ever.
